One year ago, our community changed.
What began as a wildfire near Bird River quickly grew into one of the largest and most destructive fires in Manitoba history. As conditions quickly worsened evacuation orders spread throughout portions of the RM of Alexander, and then through large swaths of Nopiming Provincial Park - forcing families, residents and cottagers to leave behind homes, cabins and cherished memories with little notice and a great deal of uncertainty.
For many in our community, May 12, 2025 is a date that will never be forgotten.
Over the days and weeks that followed, we witnessed fear, stress and heartbreak, but we also witnessed something far more powerful: community. Neighbours helped neighbours. Volunteers stepped forward. Emergency personnel worked tirelessly under incredibly difficult conditions. Local organizations, businesses, and residents came together to support one another in ways that reminded us exactly what makes this area so special.
The scars left by the Bird River fire are still visible throughout the entire region today.
Burned forests, altered shorelines, and empty spaces where cabins once stood serve as reminders of how quickly life can change. But they also remind us of the resilience of the people who call this place home.
As we mark the one-year anniversary of the fire, we pause to reflect on those who were impacted, to thank the firefighters and emergency responders who protected our communities, and to recognize the strength and compassion shown by so many throughout that difficult time.
The Bird River fire reminded all of us how quickly conditions can change and how important accurate information, emergency planning and wildfire awareness truly are. In the months ahead, BRCOA will be placing a stronger focus on fire safety by sharing resources, prevention tips, emergency preparedness information and updates relevant to our area.
Our goal is simple: to help members stay informed, better prepared and better connected during wildfire season. Whether it’s understanding evacuation readiness, improving FireSmart practices around your property, or staying aware of local conditions and restrictions, we believe education and preparedness are some of the strongest tools our community has.
