History
The Bird River Cottage Owners Association (BRCOA) has been bringing cottage owners and residents together since the 1990s, when increased development and growing interest in the area created a need for a shared voice and a more coordinated approach to community issues.
Since 1990s
From the beginning, the Association has served two important roles. First, as a collective voice - bringing forward the perspectives and concerns of cottage owners to municipal and provincial governments. Second, as a way to connect people - to share information, build relationships and create a sense of community along the Bird River.

Growing with Care
Over the years, Bird River cottage owners have been actively involved in discussions about development in the area. Assessments conducted in 1977 (prior to the BRCOA's formal inception) and again in 2007/2008 (commissioned by the Association) concluded that the region had exceeded its environmental carrying capacity. These findings continue to shape conversations about how growth is managed, ensuring that future decisions reflect both the limits of the land and the interests of those who live, stay and spend time in the Bird River area.

Protecting Water Quality
The Association has also played an important role in supporting and advocating for ongoing water quality testing. With the river serving both recreational and household uses, maintaining water quality is critical. BRCOA continues to promote awareness and diligence in monitoring this shared resource.

Supporting Daily Life
At the same time, the Association has focused on the day-to-day realities of life in the area. This includes advocating for well-maintained roads, effective dust control, proper drainage and safe conditions for both water and road travel. These efforts are grounded in a simple goal: making the Bird River a safe and enjoyable place for everyone.

Bringing People Together
Equally important is the role BRCOA plays in bringing people together. Whether it’s through gathering input, community events like the annual Family Fun Day, or initiatives such as the newly launched Bird Watch neighbourhood watch program, the Association helps create opportunities for connection while also supporting a safe and engaged community.

Staying Connected
Communication has always been an important part of this work, and it continues to evolve. Today, BRCOA connects with members through channels such as its Facebook page and, in 2026, launched a new website to provide a more central and accessible source of information. The Association is continuing to build on these tools to improve how updates are shared and how members stay informed and engaged.

Looking Ahead
Today, the Bird River Cottage Owners Association continues to evolve, but its purpose remains the same: to represent cottage owners and residents, support a strong and connected community and help ensure that the Bird River remains a place people are proud to be part of for years to come.
